bangpu

Alex took me to a blind setup he has for Black-capped Kingfisher, afterwards we went to the pier and shot gulls. Was hoping for Slender-billed Gull, not sure if we got it though ID not 100%.

 Black-capped Kingfisher (Halcyon pileata)

Common Tern (Sterna hirundo)

Brown-headed Gull (Larus brunnicephalus)

Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus)

Slender-billed Gull (Larus genei) - possibly

Up next will be 5 days in Krabi and Kao Nor Kuchi NP.
Stay tuned as i hope to bring back some good birds including a super-rarity (if i didn`t just jinx myself) LOL.

Again, i will be writing a full trip report when we are back from trip as i just don`t have time now.

Thanks for looking!

Monsoon Morning

Well, after a relatively uneventful journey we find ourselves waking up to our first morning in Bangkok.
Was surprised to hear a heavy heavy rain calling to us from outside our bedroom window.
I must have brought the weather with me because i haven't seen such a fierce downpour in a while.
The rain is not cold but will likely put a damper on my first morning alas.

Got into contact with one of the bird photographers i plan to shoot with down here.
His name is Alex Vargas and goes by the name DonGa on various forums. he is a Costa Rican living in Thailand for most of the year and is excited about our birding opportunities.
He emailed me to tell me of some good birds coming to a blind setup at Khao Yai NP and we are making plans to get out that way. The hope is to nail Blue Pitta along with Coral-billed Ground-cuckoo plus some of the other birds i got last trip like Orange-headed Thrush, White-throated Thrush and another one i have yet to see in Hainan Blue-flycatcher.
We will need to get to the setup before 6am though and since the gate to the park doesn't open till 6am we will try to gain some accomodation in the park the night before.

Some more on our journey - We flew EVA air and connected through Taipei (12 hour flight from Vancouver), a nice modern airport with a 3 hour waylay (4 hour flight to bangkok) so not too bad all in all.
However, every time my carry-on bag with camera gear goes through the xray i always have some explaining to do. This time was no exception as the scanner pulled my bag aside and a look-see was in order. I never knew a tiny jewelers screwdriver along with some allan keys could potentially be a weapon and they wanted me to check the screwdriver into my baggage.
This would have meant pulling our luggage from the cue and running the risk of said baggage missing the connection. I said in no uncertain terms that there was no way i was going to do that and i would rather they just took it and disposed of it themselves if they had such concerns.
Eventually they realized that i was going to be difficult and placed screwdriver back into my pack and waved me through.
I will place that offending "weapons" into luggage on the way back, though, less hassles the better right.

Will update later if i am able to do some shooting today.

Pipit the Birder-cat

We are going to miss Pip but he will be going to my mom's during our trip and will hopefully have some fun there.

He is as much a birder as i am i think.
He doesn't miss much and often see's the birds that come to our feeders before i do.
Of course Pip always does his bird-watching from inside and the birds never have anything to fear, not like they pay much attention anyways, something that irritates our cat sometimes LOL.

He has a pretty good Lifelist going and can count Black-capped Chickadee, Dark-eyed Junco, Spotted Towhee, Song Sparrow, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Steller's Jay (his nemisis bird) and lately Varied thrush.
at my mom's he has the chance to add to his list, Winter Wren, Downy Woodpecker and even Pileated Woodpecker are sure bets so i'm happy for him.

Trip Itinerary

It's been a crazy busy week.
My work decided to be nice to me and are making me work overtime every day this week : )
I know they are busy and i feel a little bad about "pulling the chute" on them but what can you do?
A man's gotta be able to take a holiday right?

Anyways, i'm using Apiradee's laptop as my computer decided that it wanted to be difficult on monday evening and i'm not sure if it will up and running before we fly out Friday night.
Ah well, worry about computers later, my head is all about the birds right now :)

Here is our brief trip itinerary for those interested.

We arrive in BKK at noon on Sunday 12th.
Monday the 13th i will definitely want to get out in the morning to get my first taste of Thai birds, traditionally we go out to Suan Rot Fai (train park) or somewhere close by as Apiradee will be doing some renewing of Thai ID stuff in the afternoon.

Tuesday 14th is open so far.

Wednesday 15th
we plan to drive to Nakhon Sawan as Apiradee has some property in her name there and the family has decided to sell so her presence there is required.
We will spend the night there (no hotel booked yet).

Thursday 16th we have booked Lum Phanom (guide who works Bungporaphet and is the guy to see about getting Siberian Ruby-throat) for as long as we want as he charges by the hour. We will be calling to him when we get there to re-confirm but i imagine it will be an early start.
After Bungporophet and Lum Phanom we will drive to Mai Wong NP as we have a 5 person cabin booked for the night.
Mai Wong could be pretty good provided the bugs don't eat us first.

Friday 17th we will get up early and bird (shoot) all morning and maybe some afternoon before heading back to BKK that night.

Saturday 18th we fly down to Krabi where we will spend 5 nights.
We will spend 3 nights at the Morokat resort at KNC and have luckily booked Yothin (Khao Nor Chuchi guide who is famous for being the guy every birder seeks out if they want a chance at the endangered Gurney's Pitta) for 2 full days and 1 night (Thai owls!). :D
After KNC and Yothin we will spend 2 nights in Krabi and hope to get out to the mangrove and shorebirds.

Friday 24th we are back in BKK.

Saturday 25th is free.

Sunday 26th is free.

Monday 27th
is free.

Tuesday 28th is free.

Wednesday 29th is free.

Thursday 30th
is free.

Friday 31st is free.

I say "free" because we have not set anything in stone, but were thinking of doing as much shooting as possible, be it Khao Yai, KK or closer spots like Bangpu, Lam Pak Bia, Puttamonthon etc.

We depart on Jan 1st back to the cold Canadian winter.

More updates as they happen...

What Bird?

Posed the question "what made you a birder?" on a birding forum and it was interesting to read the responses.

Birds have been a part of my life since i was a wee lad, yet i only came to realize that fact recently.

When i was little i used to paint with watercolours, mountain landscapes and flaming sunsets, one of the first things i learned to add to the painting was the classic W and M stick bird shape, i suppose now that they were gulls, sunsets in particular popped when a few strategically placed birds were added to the scene.
i drew quite a few eagle head portraits as well but rarely tackled the full bird as i could never get the body right.

As i got older i became a cub scout and distinctly remember earning a badge with binoculars on it.
I'm sure one of the requirements was to list birds seen in your neighborhood over a period of time.
I must have spent some time bird-watching in Ladysmith back in grade 5 and not even known it, must have got a robin at least

One of the important moments for me i think was a family camping trip back when i must have been 10 or so.
Our car hit a bird, i remember it hitting the windshield and bouncing off, surely dead.
I cried in the backseat, traumatized by the event.

I never really thought of birds though, there were other things like BMX racing, skateboarding, baseball, fishing, reading sci-fi fantasy, obsessing over girls etc. to occupy my thoughts.

I had a budgie as a young teen though and we were pretty close, there are pictures of it on my shoulders, it was sad when it died as well.

There was a time when i used to catch snakes and stuff like that, this sounds horrible now that i think about it but i caught a few birds in the bush with my hands as well, always let them go of course.

I wish i had been a birder as a kid now that i think about it because i spent many summers as a kid on my grandparents farm in Finland, i could have began a European list ages ago
Only birds i can recall from Finland were the stuffed hunting trophies of pheasants and grouse on the mantle of one of my uncle's homes.
they were into hunting.

After that birds were out of the picture until i began art school after high school.
I began drawing birds again, only they were always drawn either as detailed pencil crayon paintings of chinese tin toy birds, or as dreamy cartoony visions whispering things in my ear (i kid you not  ).
I worked the romantic angle with one such composition, calling it "a bird whispered your name" and used it with more than one girlfriend
There was other bird stuff in my art as well, i was using sharks and stuff too in my art but birds were definitely in my thoughts back then.

There was also a summer back during that art school period when a few of us partook in hallucinogenic drugs as was the fashion back in the late 80's.
We used to walk all night long, wandering great distances in the midnight hour and often finding ourselves on the waterfront in the dark.
Were were scared silly a number of times by these big birds that would squawk loudly before flying off.
At the time we never thought what species only that it was a mystical moment
i figured out a while ago that they were GBH's and cormorants that spooked us.

this pretty much brings me to near 5 years ago...

..only i have to mention one other bird-awakening moment before i met and married Audy.
I used to post a lot on a forum devoted to cool hip asian culture.
I used to get drunk and post random silly stuff (it was my first forum ever), one such post was more of a rant about what i called the Sleep Birds.
I was living by myself in North Van in an apartment (ironically only a block from where we bought our first and present home years later) and kept getting wakened up first thing in the morning by a strange bird song and it was driving me batty (in a funny way).
the call was a whistled Wheee (ascending) Whooo (descending) and i wanted to know just what bird was getting into my head
of course no one on that forum would even venture a guess  .
It's a pity that a lot of those drunken post have been taken away by the sand of time, i could only find 5 remaining threads and Sleep Birds wasn't one of them :(

My wife Audy and i had gotten into breeding and showing Betta fish as a hobby and my prime interest was in the short-tail wild-form plakat, although we successfully bred double-tails and half-moon fish as well and even won best in show novice class in the only competition we ever entered.
We retired from the fishy world after that as it was too much work, especially when Audy was finally able to legally work in the country and got a job.

the pencil techinique is used in Thailand to train the fish to flare, it's called "angry-stick" technique.

After fish we decided to get into photography and developed a fetish for cheap plastic film cameras like Lomo's and Holga's.
We would shoot urban stuff like chinatown and back alley comps, no rules as far as composition, we were artists maaan 8)

At this time a co-worker caught the bird photography bug and picked up a D70 and a 200mm lens and started going out to Reifel to shoot.
We used to kid him at work about the birds but that all changed one day when he brought in a print of a American Wigeon taking off and i was impressed.

He was also on Flickr and because of him i joined as well, and the rest is history  .

I had originally wanted him to shoot close-ups of our show fish but in the end we ended up going out to Reifel one day, Audy with a newly bought D50 and low budget Sigma 300mm lens and me with a Fuji Finepix 10x zoom point & shoot.

That was it, we were hooked (more or less), i at least began to notice for the first time the variety of bird life and wanted to know their names.
We took your typical shots of R-W blackbirds, Marsh wrens, GBH's, ducks and it was cool.

Our first bird picture on Flickr, shot by Audy.

"Echo Tester" by revs

Pics above from May 21, 2006, Reifel

I could understand now why my work friend was into it. (shame he dropped out of the game, he could never get close enough with his lens and got frustrated).

It wasn't till we saw a flicker digging up the cracks in the sidewalk a block away from our apartment one morning that we finally broke down and bought our first field guide (big black hard-cover Birds of Canada).
I started making a life list of shot species soon after that.

May 28, 2006

Audy's interest in actually taking pictures of birds has waned but she still loves to get out birding with me when she can.

Apologies if this is far too long a ramble but i kind of wanted to get it into words for myself.
